A Principal's Tale: Life In 31 Days
Fabu Modupe
A riveting 31-day journey into the life and education style of one chosen for such a time as this. “A Principal’s Tale,” by Dr. Shelley McIntosh gives its readers an up-close, personal look into the real life of a principal so dedicated and committed to her calling that she looks for herself in a meeting she hosts by asking the staff, “Has anyone seen Dr. McIntosh?”
Dr. McIntosh’s involvement in planning, directing education and being true to her calling is clearly evident from the first page to the last. The Reflections given at the end of each day motivates the reader to continue their life’s journey because there’s more than meets the eye and surpasses all understanding.
As a reader, you will experience the joy, pain, dedication, and sacrifice of an extraordinary educator/administrator who all students, parents, teachers, and school district administrators should have the privilege of walking through education with even though she sometimes puts on mismatched shoes in her flurry to get to the educational mind field. Trust and believe that as you read her memoirs the everyday challenges in the life of a principal is not for the faint of heart or short distance runner.

I found this book to be very refreshing. To hear the days and the life of a Principal in an urban school was quite interesting. Being in administration myself in an urban school, I was able to parallel my days account to what the author stated in her book. Dr. McIntosh's accounts of her 31 days showcased her determination, drive, professionalism, fairness, and high expectations of her staff and students. From the moment I began reading the book, I couldn't put it down! She gave vivid descriptions and details to allow the reader to visualize exactly what her days entails. I can't wait for a follow up to that book!

“A Principal’s Tale,” was an excellent rendition of the effectiveness of her “Servant Leadership” model. Particularly, the Authoritative Approach that she implemented throughout her daily encounters. In other words, she didn’t use her authority to demand others to do something. She made suggestions to her team/staff of what they should do because it may be more beneficial, with knowledge to back up her suggestions. I think this type of leader is more likely to be respected and obeyed. This was evident among her team. They respected her to the utmost and were willing to do what she asked.
On the other hand, an Authoritarian Leader expects blind submission, is bossy and demanding. Their approach is more like a dictatorship “Do as I say or else...” This type of approach was not characteristic of her leadership and therefore may explain why she experienced success many times over with her team .It was a unique 31 day tour and reveal of the emotional, social, personal, professional, spiritual, and physical challenges of her life as a principal. I truly enjoyed reading the book, and would recommend it to all who enjoy reading. It’s motivating, sometimes funny, and undoubtedly captivating.
