The Urgency of Effective Reading Instruction
The current dilemma facing the nation is a growing achievement gap. More, accurately stated, the academic gap has a direct relationship on the amount of income one can earn. The academic achievement gap between students from high-income and low-income families have grown significantly in the last three decades. At this present rate, today's minority poor student population will find it impossible to sustain themselves or their families as adults. There is an urgent need to address this situation.

Bridging the income achievement gap starts on a school level with highly effective instruction in reading foundational skills with trained teachers. They are the greatest influence on student achievement. addressing curriculum and instruction face to face on a daily basis. In light of this, attention and effort must be directly focused on increasing the effectiveness of both school leaders and teachers to radically improve the reading skills of students. The urgency to address the reading gap can be met by explicit, systematic, and consistent direct instruction.
